Fast autotuning of a hydrogen maser by cavity Q modulation

    Get PDF
A new fast autotuner for the hydrogen maser was implemented. By modulating the cavity, a phase shift in the maser output signal is induced which is proportional to the cavity tuning error. The phase shift is detected and fed back to a varactor tuner to stabilize the cavity against long-term drifts. Also, a PIN-diode cavity modulator which gives no incidental frequency shift over a very wide range of operation was developed. Modulated at over 200 Hz, it allows variations in maser cavity frequency to be compensated with a loop gain greater than 1000. Compensation of incidental amplitude modulation of the output was demonstrated

Using White Dish CMB Anisotropy Data to Probe Open and Flat-Lambda CDM Cosmogonies

We use data from the White Dish experiment to set limits on cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies in open and spatially-flat-Lambda cold dark matter cosmogonies. We account for the White Dish calibration uncertainty, and marginalize over the offset and gradient removed from the data. Our 2-sigma upper limits are larger than those derived previously. These upper limits are consistent with those derived from the COBECOBE-DMR data for all models tested.Comment: 17 pages of latex. Uses aasms4.sty. 4 figures included. Submitted to ApJ

Soft computing for intelligent data analysis

    Get PDF
Intelligent data analysis (IDA) is an interdisciplinary study concerned with the effective analysis of data. The paper briefly looks at some of the key issues in intelligent data analysis, discusses the opportunities for soft computing in this context, and presents several IDA case studies in which soft computing has played key roles. These studies are all concerned with complex real-world problem solving, including consistency checking between mass spectral data with proposed chemical structures, screening for glaucoma and other eye diseases, forecasting of visual field deterioration, and diagnosis in an oil refinery involving multivariate time series. Bayesian networks, evolutionary computation, neural networks, and machine learning in general are some of those soft computing techniques effectively used in these studies
